The Welland Canal remains closed to all traffic in both directions following a significant incident Thursday afternoon at Port Colborne, Ontario. The saltwater vessel BBC Tokyo struck the Clarence Street Bridge (Bridge 21) while heading downbound around noon, leaving the bridge in the raised position and forcing canal authorities to shut down navigation indefinitely. Seaway crews are on-site assessing structural damage. No injuries or environmental impacts have been reported, but the closure is already affecting vessel transits between Lake Ontario and the lower lakes — a critical choke point during the early spring navigation season.
The incident comes as the Great Lakes enter peak shipping season, with water levels running well above normal across the system. Lake Ontario sits 3.11 feet above Low Water Datum, while Lake Erie leads at 2.82 feet, and Lakes Superior, Michigan, and Huron all register 1.19 to 1.55 feet above baseline. These elevated levels should favor deeper-draft vessels, but the Welland Canal closure threatens to back up traffic system-wide until repairs and bridge assessments are complete.
Meanwhile, rough conditions are testing mariners elsewhere. Lake Superior is under a gale warning through this evening, with 3-foot waves expected as a low-pressure system lifts into James Bay. Lake Huron faces 8-foot waves and showers as a cold front sweeps through. Lake Michigan is breezy with 4-foot seas and 20- to 30-knot gusts. Lake Erie and Ontario remain calmer, with 1-foot waves forecast.
On a longer horizon, the National Park Service is pitching a new ferry to replace the aging *Ranger III*, the 1958-built workhorse that has served Isle Royale National Park and Houghton, Michigan, for nearly seven decades. The White House is requesting 2027 budget funds for the replacement as part of the largest noncombat ship upgrade in decades — a recognition that aging Great Lakes infrastructure needs renewal.
