McKeil Marine's *Ontario Venture* made history this past weekend, carrying the inaugural cargo from Parrish and Heimbecker's newly opened grain terminal at Picton, Ontario. The laker departed Saturday with a mixed load of wheat and soybeans bound for P&H's terminal in Quebec City — a milestone for both the recently acquired vessel and the grain facility that broke ground less than two years ago. The Picton terminal, developed in partnership with Picton Terminals, occupies the site of a former industrial operation and signals renewed agricultural shipping activity on the upper lakes as the navigation season picks up momentum. Meanwhile, other carriers have wasted no time resuming spring operations. The *Wilfred Sykes* loaded stone at Calcite, Michigan, on Friday — the first seasonal shipment from that port — before moving to Port Dolomite for additional cargo. Downbound traffic through the Seaway corridor remained steady on Saturday, with vessels including *Algosolis*, *EK-River*, *Sarah Desgagnes*, and *Algoma Strongfield* all moving toward lower-lake and St. Lawrence River destinations. Water levels remain favorable across the system. Lake Erie stands at 2.49 feet above Low Water Datum, and Ontario at 2.52 feet — both well above seasonal minimums. Lake Superior sits 1.03 feet above datum. Mariners should expect moderate to fresh winds on Lake Michigan and Huron through mid-week as a warm front stalls across the northern lakes, with waves running 5 to 6 feet on those bodies. The early-season surge in activity — from grain exports to stone movements — reflects conditions ideal for loading and transit as the lakes shed winter ice and water temperatures normalize.
