Chris Izworski's morning brief from the Great Lakes finds the navigation season ramping up with significant vessel activity and challenging weather. The American Spirit, a 1,000-footer, became the first such vessel to dock at the recently rebuilt Carbide Dock in the Soo on Friday, April 18th, arriving under escort by the tug Colorado and appearing to operate on starboard engine only. The Spirit remained docked as of Saturday evening, underscoring the importance of infrastructure upgrades as the fleet begins its spring push. Meanwhile, her fleetmate Burns Harbor is at BayShip in Sturgeon Bay tending to unspecified mechanical issues—a reminder that spring always brings its share of maintenance demands.
Water levels across the basin remain healthy for early season operations. Lake Erie sits 2.70 feet above Low Water Datum at Cleveland, the highest of the five lakes, while Lake Ontario stands at 3.17 feet and Lake Huron at 1.93 feet. Lake Superior, typically the first to see heavy traffic, is 0.87 feet above datum at Sault Ste. Marie. These conditions favor loaded passages, though operators should mind the forecast.
Monday evening through late night brings a gale watch for Lake Superior, with high pressure building across Michigan and shifting southeast. North to northwest winds will gust across Huron through tonight, with waves on that lake running 8 feet—the roughest of the current system. Lake Michigan waves are running 3 feet under building high pressure. Conditions will moderate by Tuesday as the system clears.
In longer-term lake news, the National Park Service has proposed replacing the aging Ranger III, built in 1958, which ferries passengers between Houghton and Isle Royale. The White House's 2027 fiscal budget includes requests for a new ferry—part of the largest noncombat vessel upgrade in decades. Isle Royale opens officially this season with its celebrated wolf-moose research project ongoing.
Vessel Spotlight
*American Spirit* — A 1,000-foot Great Lakes freighter, she made history on April 18 as the first vessel of her size to dock at the newly rebuilt Carbide Dock in Sault Ste. Marie, arriving under partial power and tug escort.
*Burns Harbor* — A fleetmate of the Spirit, she is currently at BayShip in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, undergoing mechanical repairs during the early season push.
